Microsoft has announced important changes to how users sign in to Microsoft Entra ID (Azure AD) accounts.
To improve security and protect users from phishing attacks, Microsoft is moving to passkeys as the preferred sign-in method and will retire Microsoft-provided SMS and voice authentication on February 1, 2027.
What's Changing?

Starting September 1, 2026
- Users currently using SMS or voice for Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) will automatically be encouraged to register a passkey.
- Passkeys will become the recommended default authentication method.

Starting February 1, 2027
- Microsoft-provided SMS and voice authentication services will no longer be available.
What Should You Do?
If any users in your organization still use SMS or voice authentication:
- Review and identify affected users.
- Enable and register passkeys for those users.
- Inform users about the upcoming change.
- Complete the migration before February 1, 2027 to avoid sign-in disruptions.
Recommended Action
We strongly recommend moving all users to passkey authentication as soon as possible. Taking action before September 1, 2026 will allow your organization to transition smoothly and avoid future login interruptions.
