For personal Microsoft accounts (outlook.cloud.microsoft) if you enable 2‑step verification first.
You can generate a 16‑character app password once 2FA is on.
Step 1: Go to Microsoft Account Security
- Open https://account.microsoft.com/security.
- Sign in with your Outlook email.
Step 2: Check if Two-Step Verification is Enabled
- Scroll down to the “Two-step verification” section.
- If it says “Off”, click “Set up two-step verification” and follow the prompts.
- You cannot create an app password without two-step verification enabled.
Step 3: Find App Passwords
- Once two-step verification is ON, go back to the Security dashboard: https://account.microsoft.com/security.
- Look for a section called “Additional security options” (sometimes called “More security options”).
- Scroll down until you see “App passwords”.
- Click “Create a new app password”. Microsoft will generate a password for you.
Step 4: Use the App Password
- Copy the password and paste it into the app/device that doesn’t support two-step verification.
- You do not use your regular Outlook password for these apps.
Important:
If you still cannot see “App passwords”, it usually means:
- Two-step verification is not fully enabled.
- You are using a business/school account—app password options may be controlled by the organization.
