How to Fix the "Domain is Already in Use" Error in Google Workspace

When setting up Google Workspace, you may encounter the following error:

"This domain is already in use"

This error occurs when your domain is already associated with an existing Google Workspace account. To resolve this issue, either access the existing account and remove the domain, or use Google's Domain Recovery Tool to verify domain ownership and request control of the domain. This guide explains the recovery process step by step.

Step-by-Step: Submit a Contested Domain Request

If you do not have access to the Google Workspace account currently associated with your domain, Google's Domain Recovery tool can help you prove ownership and request control of the domain.

Step 1: Open the Domain Recovery Tool

Visit the Google Admin Toolbox Domain Recovery page:

https://toolbox.googleapps.com/apps/recovery/domain_in_use

You will see a screen similar to the one below, titled "Google Workspace / Cloud Identity: Sign up Issues".

Step 2: Enter Your Domain Name

In the Domain field, enter the domain name that is showing the "This domain is already in use" error.

Example:

yourdomain.com

Make sure to enter only the domain name without:

  • https://
  • www
  • Any additional paths or URLs

Once entered, click CONTINUE.

Step 3: Generate a Reference Number

Google will generate a unique reference number for your recovery request. This number helps Google track your case throughout the verification process.

Keep this reference number for future communication and troubleshooting.

Step 4: Verify Domain Ownership

Google will ask you to verify that you own the domain.

This typically involves:

  • Logging in to your domain's DNS management panel.
  • Adding a TXT verification record provided by Google.
  • Waiting for DNS changes to propagate.

Verification proves that you are the legitimate owner or administrator of the domain.

Step 5: Complete the Request

After domain verification is successful:

  1. Return to the recovery tool.
  2. Complete the remaining steps.
  3. Submit the request.

Once the request is submitted, a unique ticket/reference number will be generated for your recovery case. Make sure to save this number, as it can be used to track the status of your request and for any future communication with Google Support.
